Harmonic
rhythm
Harmonic rhythm refers
to the rate of change from one chord to another in a composition.
It is represented by note values that equal the length of time the
composition stays on the same chord. Following is the beginning
of the folk song "All Through the Night." The harmony
has been analyzed below the music. The harmonic rhythm is shown
above. Notice it is not necessary to retain the same harmonic rhythm
(e.g., quarter note) throughout.
