Harmonic rhythm

Harmonic rhythm refers to the rate of change from one chord to another in a composition. It is represented by note values that equal the length of time the composition stays on the same chord. Following is the beginning of the folk song "All Through the Night." The harmony has been analyzed below the music. The harmonic rhythm is shown above. Notice it is not necessary to retain the same harmonic rhythm (e.g., quarter note) throughout.
