Preliminary Project

Creative Projects A-D will require you to submit, via e-mail or other method as requested by your instructor, music examples that you compose. In order to do so, you will input your music using Finale NotePad, a free, downloadable software application.

The purpose of this project is to give you experience at working with music notation software, specifically Finale NotePad. The navigation button "Finale Tutor" (found at the top of each page in this course), will link you to a page that contains a simple introduction to the basics of Finale NotePad. I suggest you investigate that page before attempting to complete this project. If needed, detailed tutorials as to how to use Finale NotePad can be accessed within Finale NotePad itself under the Help Menu.. These are PDF files that can be read and/or printed.

For this project, you will recreate three music examples--a rhythm, a melody and a score--in Finale NotePad. Each example includes directions (as boxed text) and illustrations of some Finale NotePad tools. If you run into a stumbling block, revisit the Finale Tutor or access the Help Menu within Finale NotePad for solutions to your problem.

Recreate a Rhythm
  • Print the PDF file containing a rhythm example.
  • Recreate the example only (not the directions) using Finale NotePad.
  • Your rhythm should match as closely as possible the example as it appears in the PDF file.

Recreate a Melody
  • Print the PDF file containing a melody.
  • Recreate the example only (not the directions) using Finale NotePad.
  • Your melody should match as closely as possible the example as it appears in the PDF file.

Click here for the PDF file containing the melody and directions.

Recreate a Score

  • Recreate the example only (not the directions) using Finale NotePad.
  • Your score should match as closely as possible the example as it appears in the PDF file.

Click here for the PDF file containing the directions and score.

Submit

When you have completed recreating these examples, save each as a Finale NotePad file and send them to the instructor as an e-mail attachment. Name each file by the project name and your name. Include both your first and last names with your last name first. Please follow the example for uppercase/lowercase letters:

Example: Prelim Rhythm LastFirst

Your instructor may wish for you to print your project and submit a hard copy.
